Visiting an onsen (hot spring) is one of Japan’s most relaxing and unique cultural experiences. If it’s your first time, don’t worry! Just follow these simple steps.
Before You Go
Bring a small towel (many onsens also rent or sell towels).
Remove all clothing before entering the bathing area. Swimsuits are not allowed unless specifically stated.
Leave valuables in the lockers provided.
Enter the Correct Bath
Onsens are usually separated by gender.
Men: 男 (Otoko)
Women: 女 (Onna)
Make sure you enter the correct side.
Wash Yourself First
Before entering the hot spring:
Sit at one of the shower stations
Wash your body thoroughly using soap and shampoo-
Rinse completely
This step is essential and considered good manners.
Enter the Hot Spring
Once you’re clean:
Slowly enter the bath.
The water is usually between 38°C and 42°C (100–108°F).
Relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Do not splash or swim.
Towel Etiquette
Your small towel should never touch the bath water.
You can:
Place it on your head.
Leave it on the edge of the bath.
Be Respectful
Please avoid:
Loud conversations.
Running.
Jumping into the bath.
Using your phone or camera.
Washing clothes or towels in the bath.
Onsens are quiet places where everyone comes to relax
After Your Bath
Sit at one of the shower stations
Wash your body thoroughly using soap and shampoo-
Rinse completely
Dry yourself with your towel before returning to the changing room.
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Take your time, there’s no need to rush.
